What is Li-Fi?
The first part of the abbreviation, “Li Fi”, comes from the word light. Why? Because Li Fi, like Wi-Fi, enables many electronic devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones to connect wirelessly to the Internet, while Li-Fi achieves this using light rather than radio waves. This solution can provide unprecedented data transfer speeds. The first tests of Li-Fi technology were started in 2011 by Prof. Harald Haas, who achieved data transfer of 1.6 Gbps under laboratory conditions. Subsequent tests by British scientists showed that such transmission could reach speeds as high as 224 Gbps.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Li-Fi?
Now, you know what is Li-Fi, so let’s go to its pros and cons. One disadvantage of Li-Fi is that the data device is the size of a flash drive, so it fits better in a computer than a phone. In addition, Li-Fi works only in single rooms, since the signal does not penetrate obstacles like walls. On the other hand, the advantages of this technology are certainly its speed and cheapness of operation. Moreover, it is more resistant to hacking intrusions, as they are only possible within the small space where the light is emitted. It also works without the use of electromagnetic waves, so it can be used anywhere where waves could interfere with something, such as in an operating room or an airplane.
